What is a hotspot?

Hotspots or "hot spots" are isolated thermal dissipations detectable only by thermal camera which can be created by several things. First of all a part or all of a shaded cell will become a load, therefore a resistive zone which will heat up. A defective cell or a bad weld will also create a contact resistance and therefore heat up with the passage of current. In addition to a potential underperformance, these defects can damage the panel's encapsulation material as well as its back sheet, thus exposing the plant to a risk of fire. We can sometimes see burnt areas for advanced hotspot cases for which the impacted panels will have to be changed immediately. We integrate thermographic inspection into our PV diagnostic services to detect and give you our expertise on these faults.
